Saule Dyussenbina (Kazakhstan)

Saule Dyussenbina (Karaganda, 1971) is a Kazakh multimedia artist known for her whimsical revisions of Western art history and humorous inserts of Central Asian culture, Asian female artists and herself into the male dominated Western canon. In her paintings, watercolors, prints and animations she addresses feminism, urbanism, Central Asian identity, and the role of the artist through the prism of her nomadic heritage. She has participated in multiple international biennials, including a recent commission by  the 24th Biennale of Sydney, and the X Mediations Biennale in Istanbul and Cairo. Dyussenbina’s work was included in solo and group exhibitions throughout Asia, Europe, and North America; including shows at the Centre for Heritage Arts & Textile’s (Hong Kong) and at The Dowse Museum (New Zealand). She was a subject of a mid-career retrospective at the Charles Wang Art Center at SUNY Stony Brook in New York in 2022. Dyussenbina’s art works are in the collections of the Los Angeles County Art Museum, State University of New York, and The Dowse Museum, New Zealand.
